Aluminium has established itself as a lightweight material in wide range of industries, however, the low strength compared to steel, gives aluminium a significant drawback for the use for structural components. To overcome this drawback, there are approaches to perform a fibre reinforcement of aluminium. At present, some methods for generating fibre reinforced aluminium are established in the scientific investigation. Herein a novel approach for the production of fibrereinforced aluminium components, the indirect Composite Weld Modelling (ICWM) will be presented. This method is based on the idea of additive manufacturing with laser. In the indirect method, the CWM infiltration and / or boundary layer formation takes place only during the welding process as well as the formation of the composite material. Furthermore a sandwich-like structure of the new composites has the advantage to enable a restriction of the fibre reinforcement locally on highly loaded component region and thereby increase the potential for lightweight aluminium further. The presented investigations are relating to the realization of the joining process and first results for fibre-matrix connection.
